Understanding Ultrasound Gel
|
Sterile gels are used for invasive procedures where the device is passed through the tissue such as with needle aspiration or tissue biopsy, as well as all any procedure that involves a sterile environment. It is also used for surface application such as pregnancy ultrasound, cardiac ultrasound, or a gallbladder ultrasound. Sterile gels should be used for procedures performed on mucous membranes such as gastric, vaginal, or rectal. It is also important with patients that have immunodeficiencies. You should use a single container that can be reused. Bottles should be refilled and any damaged bottled discarded. Fill bottles as close to the top as possible using the dispenser. Anytime you open a new bottle be sure to write the date on the bottle as one month is their maximum life expectancy. The dispensing nozzle or tip should not come in direct contact with the skin. Rather it should be dispensed into a separate cup or onto a cloth and then onto the patients skin. If it is dispensed directly from the container then wipe with an alcohol swab. It's a nice touch to warm the gel before it is applied. In a hospital or lab chances are there is a warmer that holds the bottles. Clean the warmers regularly with a disinfectant. If a warmer is not available you can warm by running under hot water. The gels need to be stored in a dry place that is free from contaminants like dust, insects, moisture, and rodents. Any signs of contamination and you will need to discard the entire product. There are several gels on the market which include: 1. Doppler Ultrasound Gel8.5 oz bottle of clear gel with superior coupling efficiency which means you'll get maximum imaging and clear fetal heart sounds. No fragrance and no odor and it won't stain the clothes.2. Ultra Phonic FreeThis is a high viscosity conductivity gel is environmentally friendly and it's free of propylene glycol, color, perfume, sodium, or harsh preservatives that can cause skin irritations.3. Ultra/Phonic SGThis low viscosity scanning gel pours very easily and it is highly lubricating with no odor and no staining. This is a stabilized formula so it won't thin when mixed with the salts of the body.4. Ultra/Phonic Focus Conforming Gel Pad CGPThis is a soft pliable biostatic gel pad in solid form so it stays where you place it an conforms to the body parts it is placed on.5. Fontanelle Scanning PadProtects the skull and skin of infants and eliminates the need to clean up the gel. It's safe for all transducers and the water thin pad is biostatic and disposable. The gels are an integral part of your ultrasound image. It's important that you choose the appropriate ultrasound gel for both the equipment you will be using and the application you'll be performing. A good clear scan is important to be able to ensure an adequate scan. About The Author: Yong has been working for a leading ultrasound manufacturer for last 8 years.
