Understanding graduate recruitment agencies

1. Graduate recruitment agencies make their fees from employers, who pay them a percentage fee of the starting salary offered. If they don't place you they get no fee. This means a couple of things for you, firstly, the service is a free one for you, secondly, unless they get a result for you, they won't get paid so they are motivated to help you in any way they can.

2. 'Most' large employers will use graduate recruitment agencies to help fill their vacancies. If they were to advertise their vacancies themselves, responses could be huge leaving them with an enormous task of filtering down the response, in addition to the fact that they will have had to pay for the advertising.

3. Graduate recruitment agencies will advertise in many places to ensure a constant stream of potential new candidates to feed into their database. This does mean you may be one of many candidates they could submit to jobs to earn their fees. Unless you keep in constant contact with them, you may loose out to others who do when good jobs arise, so make sure you build a good rapport with them.

4. In most cases, if you leave within 12 weeks, the agency will have to pay some, or their entire fee back. This is great news for you as they really only will put you forward to something your suitable for, and will like. For a recruitment consultant, it's one of the worst things to have done all the work to earn a fee, only to have to pay it back because it doesn't work out.

5. A graduate recruitment agencies fee will typically be between 15% and 20%. It's a healthy fee and obviously one which goes up the better salary you get offered. So when it comes to your offer, they're motivated to get you the best offer possible to maximise their fee.

6. Recruitment consultants will work regularly with the same clients, so when you are successful in getting interviews they should be able to tell you all about the interviewer in addition to knowing all the ins and outs of their recruitment process. This can be really useful to increase your chances of getting a job.

If you're new to the graduate recruitment market, using agencies can shortcut a lot of effort and also increase your chances of landing the right job. If it's your first career job, this could set the tone for the rest of your career.
