Unfinished Hardwood Flooring - Is It Right For You?
|
Unfinished hardwood flooring comes in three major sizes. There is the smaller three inch wide board, the wider four inch wide board, and finally the larger 5 inch wood board. These planks do come in all sizes, but this is actually the norm when shopping for any hardwood flooring. You get different positives with each size you may decide to purchase. It may seem that the larger the plank, the less difficult it would be to install. However, this is not always the case. There are a few universal types of wood used for unfinished hardwood flooring as well. These woods are red oak, white oak, hickory, and maple. Of course, the finish will be different for each wood from the super light to the super dark. Which is right for your use is actually a preference that is totally up to the user. Some people just prefer a lighter wood; other people enjoy a darker wood. The upkeep is about the same, but the darker the wood, the less likely it will show scuffs and blemishes. Now, let's talk grade of wood. The two most common are select and common. Common grade will actually come with more imperfection in the wood itself. Select is a more specialized wood that shows few, if any, imperfections. I for one like the common grade because I like there to be imperfections in my hardwood flooring. The main difference between finished and unfinished hardwood flooring is that finished comes ready to use. Once you install the finished hardwood flooring, it is ready for use with minimal finishing. An unfinished hardwood flooring is naked. You need to finish the floor before it is ready to use. This usually means, sanding, priming, then varnishing and polishing to your hearts desire. This is great for people who are crafty and have a skill for the home dcor. However, I for one am not one of those people. I love the thought of finishing my own hardwood floor, then reality sinks in. Whether you want finished or unfinished hardwood flooring for your home, you are sure to find benefits of both. Cost is actually not a concern here since you will spend about the same if not more on an unfinished hardwood flooring system. What you get with any hardwood floor is elegance, grace, and beauty unmatched by anything else in the world.
