Use Your Lawn Fertilizer Spreader For Sulfur Coated Fertilizer
|
There are several types of sulfur fertilizers on the market which include: 1. Ammonium SulfateUsed to correct sulfur deficiencies in the soil converting the ions to nitrate by soil bacteria.2. Elemental SulfurIs convenient because it can be applied to many different crops. For it to be useable to the plants it must break down into small particles through a physical process and then it can be transformed in the soil bacteria. Once broken into small particles it can be used but it is still a very slow process that can take many months.3. Calcium Sulfate or GypsumThis is a sulfur and calcium mix with a neutral salt which does not affect the soil. The ammonium sulfate is harder to handle so isn't used as much as some of the other products.4. PolysulfidesCan be applied directly to the soil and then irrigated with ammonia solutions but it is not compatible with some liquid fertilizers because of the acidity. Once you've chosen your sulfate fertilizer get a drop spreader which is the best style for even distribution of the material underneath the hopper. This style of spreader allows you to accurately place the material exactly where you need it. Seeds pass through a series of openings at the base of the hopper and you determine the rate of application by the position of the shut off bar which sets the size of the holes. The other option is to use a rotary spreader which broadcasts the material in a circular motion around the spreader. It's thicker in the center and more feathered along the outer edges. There is some overlapping which ensures that your entire lawn gets a proper feeding. With a rotary spreader you will get a pattern that ranges anywhere from 3 feet to 8 feet depending on the use. It makes for very quick application. No matter which style of spreader you use there are some guidelines you should follow when spreading lawn products. 1. Application of the product properly is very important to ensure a thick attractive green lawn.2. Before you fill the hopper place it off the lawn on a walkway or driveway and make sure it is closed. This ensures you don't accidentally over apply and damage your lawn.3. Start walking then slowly release the shut off lever which will allow the material to start to flow.4. If you have an odd shaped lawn apply a header strip around the edge and then move back and forth across the lawn.5. Keep a safe distance from areas you do not want to treat. The spreaders tend to throw outside the range so be aware of it. A lawn fertilizer spreader is a great way to seed or fertilizer your lawn. It will save you time and money and it will ensure you get an even distribution. It won't be long before you've got that gorgeous lawn you've always dreamed of!
