Using Pet First Aid Kits the Right Way

When family pets wind up injured, pet first aid kits are essential to have available because they'll provide the basic medical supplies wanted to prevent bleeding and prevent infection. They can buy valuable time while waiting for your pet to be treated by a pro vet.

For instance, my family once had a little terrier named Frank. Our beloved dog had been a family pet for quite a while and had reached what would be considered an old age for a dog. One day, while the family was enjoying a nice day in the yard, he got attacked by a large doberman. I had seen the doberman wandering the neighborhood, but was never anxious as he seemed friendly enough.

Our pet was left with giant laceration which we weren't able to care for since pet first aid kits were not something our family thought would become urgent to have in a minute's notice. In this example, we had to improvise with kitchen towels and shoestring to apply pressure and prevent more blood loss. We managed to drive our pet to the emergency vet's office, but because of his old age, he didn't live. Had our dog been a little younger and in better health, and had pet first aid kits been a family priority, he could have lived thru the assault.

You must also remember that when using the items in these kits, your pet might be in pain which could result in a severe bite or scratch to the person administering treatment. Even the most friendly pets will lash out when they feel surrounded and are under strain.

Let's take a look at the only way to handle a situation where an animal is at risk of losing its life. One scenario might involve a dog who has been hit by a vehicle and is now besieged under the vehicle. Really the most important thing you can do, in the absence of being trained in this type of rescue, is to simply reassure the dog until help arrives. Dogs in this type of situation will be very upset and ill tempered and may strike out and bite anybody that gets too near. You must only think about using pet first aid kits when the dog is unconscious or is physically unable to bite its rescuer.

In any sort of emergency animal rescue, call the pros because they've been trained in each kind of emergency that you can imagine. Additionally, they are going to have pet first aid kits available as well as the necessary equipment to do the job properly. You will often be encouraged to get involved, especially if it is your own pet, but if it is not safe to do so you might find yourself making the circumstances even worse. Administering pet first aid should nearly always be handled by a professional animal rescue expert.

Pet first aid kits generally contain identical elementary items that any human first aid kit would contain, but also include a guide which is restricted to the treatment of animal wounds.

One of the most elementary pet first aid kits, if kept accessible, can spare your pet's life in an emergency. Also, check out this great article concerning school survival.
