Using Stainless Steel Pipe Bollards around Your Home

Although stainless steel pipe bollards are often used along streets or in parking lots to separate vehicle traffic from foot traffic or elsewhere for security purposes, they can also be used around the home. Especially for homes that have large yard areas, stainless steel pipe bollards can be used in the yard to border gardens, around the driveway to keep cars from areas where they shouldn't park, or even as front yard or porch decorations.

* Driveway - For your driveway, especially if it is long or wide, you can use pipe bollards made of stainless steel to keep cars from getting too close to the lawn, or perhaps too close to a front or back door. You can space the stainless steel pipe bollards out so that they are just close enough to each other so that a car cannot pass through them, and for most driveways this means that you will only need a few. Though stainless steel is not easily painted, it still looks good almost anywhere, and will not easily rust or corrode, so your pipe bollards should last a long time. If you want them to look more decorative, you could fit them with battery-powered lights on the top, or if you really wanted to get technical you could wire electrical lights into them - although this may mean enlisting the help of an electrician. The pipe bollards could be as short as two feet, or you could have them be about waist high; they only need to be tall enough so that drivers can see them.* Yard - Though most of the pipe bollards that you see along streets or parking lots have a fairly wide diameter, they can actually come in many different sizes. You can make your own thinner pipe bollards by using 1 to 3 inch stainless steel pipe, putting them where you want them, and then filling them with concrete. For your yard, pipe bollards made of stainless steel can be used to frame a garden or a patio. Once again, you can top your pipe bollards with lights or you could just top them with stainless steel caps. The stainless steel will resist rusting and corroding from continuous garden watering or from hosing off the patio, and to keep them looking nice you'll just need to hose them off occasionally and polish them about twice a year. During the holidays you could decorate your stainless steel pipe bollards with appropriately-colored ribbon, such as red and green for the Christmas holidays or red, white, and blue for the 4th of July. If you have a yard where children play often you will want your pipe bollards to have something on the top of the pipes so that there will not be sharp exposed edges. Lights, stainless steel caps, or caps made of wood or plastic will usually work fine.* Porch - You might wonder what reasons you could possibly have for using pipe bollards made of stainless steel on your porch. One good reason is that they make good light posts, especially for battery-powered lights. You could have one or two on either side of your porch steps, and you could top them with different colored lights, depending on the season or just depending on your mood. You would be surprised at how warm and inviting this can look, especially at night.
