Using a Special Cutting Tool For Building Furniture
|
There are cutting tools that are designed to cut wood, and cutting tools that are primarily used to cut metal. Most custom furniture designers and builders use cutting tools that are designed to cut wood, although some more intricate furniture designs consist of both cut wood and cut metal. The first thing that you want to do if you will be designing and building custom furniture is to prepare your workshop and stock it with the proper tools before you begin. Although you may find that there are times when you will need a special cutting tool that you hadn't already bought, having some basic tools to begin with will help you get a good start. You'll want to have a good table saw in your workshop. Since your main building projects will be furniture, you will most often be using thick woods, most of which will also be fairly dense, such as oak, pine, cherry, or maple. Table saws can do a multitude of tasks, and no matter what type of woodworking project you will be doing, whether you are making a birdhouse or a dining table, you're probably going to need a table saw. You'll also need a bandsaw for cutting curves - essential for building tables. Be sure that you buy several different blade sizes for your bandsaw, so that you can use the large sizes for cutting wide curves, and the narrows sizes for more intricate and sharper curving. Using a bandsaw blade for sharp curving that is too large will result in rough, uneven edges, something that a lot of sanding may not even be able to correct. A planer should also be included in your workshop, as this will be a special cutting tool that you'll use often in order to even out the wood that you will be working with. Many wood pieces come a little warped from where you buy them, or they may warp a bit if they sit in your shop or garage for too long. Wood pieces are also sometimes naturally bumpy, and if your furniture needs to be very flat in some places, then the planer will work well for what you need. Be sure to remember, however, that some furniture looks best if the wood is kept as natural as possible, and the bumps or flaws may add to the custom-made charm of the piece. To go along with the hand tools that you will be using for cutting and shaping, you'll want to have a lathe for holding and spinning wood, such as when you are designing table legs or posts. The tools that you will be using with your lathe will almost always be hand tools, such as different sizes of chisels, spindle gouges, and nose scrapers.
