Using a Veneer Cutting Machine

Cutting veneer from wood can sometimes be difficult, and a good, quality veneer cutting machine can make a big difference in whether you succeed or fail at the task. Businesses that deal in the design and manufacturing of furniture, and also businesses that deal in building homes and businesses use veneer cutting machines. Veneer is used on tables, walls, paneling, floors, and in some circumstances even siding, and having a cutting machine for creating veneer is essential to many businesses.

Although those who have home workshops and do home repairs or make custom furniture could conceivably use veneer cutting machines, this is usually not the case, since veneer is cut from whole logs, and therefore one would need a lot of space. It is possible, however, to cut veneer from cut logs, so someone who has a home workshop could use a smaller cutting machine if they need veneer that is not in large sheets. If someone is using veneer for making tables, for example, then he or she could use a smaller veneer cutting machine. Most machines for cutting veneer, however, are industrial sized, and are used by lumber companies and building companies. These cutting machines can cut veneer from logs in different sheet sizes, depending on what the veneer will be used for.

Veneer cannot be cut from any kind of log, or just any part of a log. Veneer logs must be almost completely free of defects, and must be as straight as possible in order for the veneer cutting machine to cut effectively. Cutting veneer from oak and walnut logs is common, and veneer can also be cut from maple, ash and other types of logs, as long as they meet the criteria required to be a veneer log. Many companies that regularly sell veneer logs or cut veneer from logs buy their logs from companies or private individuals who grow trees in a way that makes them produce good veneer logs. Some of the ways to do this is by pruning the trees in a certain way, making sure that the trees get plenty of direct sunlight so they won't tend to grow crooked searching for the sun, and removing vines or other substances that make cause defects in the trees, and therefore the logs. Veneer logs go for a much higher price than other types of logs, as they are in high demand. When a business uses cutting machines for veneer, the logs have to conform to certain standards or the cutting machines will not be able to properly cut the veneer from the logs. Lumber companies or building companies that cut veneer for building materials will not make a profit if they buy substandard logs that do not produce quality veneer, therefore they are very careful when purchasing veneer logs. The machines used to cut veneer must also be of a high quality, and must receive constant maintenance to ensure that no veneer flaws are caused by faulty machine function.
