Some of the history behind the treasure purse resides in the practice of early gentlemen attaching pouches, called pockets then, to the back of a girdle or belt. However, the most opportunistic brigand would disguise the friendly "pat-on-the-back" as a means to cut the purse away from their person, and thus garnering the moniker of "cutpurse". In a century's time, the purse was given much clout as a status symbol, and much of the more elite individuals at the time were wearing them as a sign of their place in society.

Paintings of the day reveal that many treasure purses were flat pouches gathered by tasseled strings, and by the end of the century; most women were seen preferring to hide their pouches under their skirts as fashion went undercover. All of this would change with the years, and pockets were turned inside of breeches.

By the eighteenth century, men had discarded the purse as a necessary item of use, and women could not keep the pouch of the treasure purse because their attire had become too delicate to conceal the "pocket".

Instead, they were using the reticule, as they were denoted then, which later became the purse we know of today. Throughout the twentieth century, handbags have reappeared as many skirts and clothes became tighter and skimpier, both as utility and expressive item for style.

Now every era of fashion seems to have its own variation of the handbag, or purse, and in many shapes and colors to express and compliment a wardrobe of any kind. A new entry in the notation of history seems to reveal that as men's outfits become more streamlined, there are many more men who have found the convenience of a shoulder bag or handbag. There many different kinds of styles and attitudes to reflect your personal outlook, and purses are no different.
