Viagra: Prescription Medication, Not a Party Drug

Viagra, as most people know, is a prescription medication that is used to help men overcome ED hurdles. However, some people have begun using this drug as a party drug because of the buzz it can sometimes create. Unfortunately, this is a very dangerous practice as Viagra is first and foremost a prescription medication that has the potential to cause serious problems when use inappropriately.

What is Viagra?

Viagra is the brand name of the prescription medication sildenafil citrate. This medication is used to treat erectile dysfunction, which is also referred to as ED. This medication works by stimulating an increase in blood flow in the penis, which in turn allows it to become erect.

Taking Viagra

Generally Viagra is prescribed as a single daily dose. The size of the dose is going to start at 25mg and gradually be increased until desired results are achieved. For most people it is going to take a few days of taking this medication before it will work, however, after that, Viagra will work in as little as fourteen minutes and last up to four hours. To get the best results from this medication you will not want to take it with alcohol or fatty foods. Both of these items will slow down your body’s reaction to Viagra stimulation.

Side Effects

There are several reasons why you don’t want to take Viagra as a party drug. The main reason is that it can have serious side effects that can impair your health. The most common side effects are generally mild. They include reactions like headaches, upset stomach, sensitivity to light, facial flushing and blurred vision. While these side effects are relatively mild you still should not take Viagra as a party drug because the serious side effects to this prescription medication can be life threatening.

If your body has a serious reaction to Viagra then several problems could develop. Some people experience an erection that lasts longer than four hours. This problem can cause long term damage to the erectile tissue in your penis and can lead to other sexual and functional problems. Chest pain and nausea can also develop indicating that your reaction is severe. In rare cases, people have reported losing their sight and vision after taking Viagra. (It should be noted here that it isn’t know if the loss of vision and hearing is related to taking Viagra or to other issues, but it is still something you need to think about.)

Interactions

When you are partying it is important that you avoid controlled substances like Viagra, because of possible interactions they can have with other medications and substances in your system. If you take nitrates, for example, even on an occasional basis, Viagra should be avoided at all costs. These two substances do not mix well and their combination can lead to life threatening conditions. If you take alpha blockers or protese inhibitors, then you will need to start on a lower dose to prevent problems from developing. Finally, if you have liver or kidney problems, you don’t want to experiment with Viagra without a doctor’s supervision.

Party Drugs?

As you have read, Viagra is a drug that has been designed to treat ED. It was not designed to produce buzzes or be used recreationally. If this drug were safe to use as a recreational drug it would be offered over-the-counter. Even though a lot of people can take this drug and not experience negative side effects, the potential for serious reactions exists. To prevent your party experience from becoming a tragedy, respect the prescription status of this ED medication.

On the other hand, if you have talked to your doctor and he or she has cleared you to use Viagra, then you can use this drug to have “fun.” Follow the dosing schedule established by your doctor, avoid taking it with alcohol and fatty foods and allow your body plenty of time to feel the full effect of Viagra before setting your sites on an evening of passion. When all these pieces are placed together, you will be able to experience a great evening with your partner, one that you will both remember.
