Viagra is Not Just an Aphrodisiac…And Other Rumors Debunked

Viagra

Some people mistakenly refer to Viagra as just an aphrodisiac, but it is much more then that. Viagra treats erectile dysfunction in men by increasing the blood flow to the penis and that allows a man to get and sustain an erection. The lack of blood flow can be caused by a number of different factors. Men who have high blood pressure or high cholesterol can develop ED, as can men who suffer from hardening of the arteries. ED can also be caused by smoking.

Viagra was originally being developed in the 1990s as a medication for the treatment of angina. A surprising side effect was the fact that it increased the blood supply going to the penis. When the medication failed to perform as expected with angina patients more testing was done and Viagra was approved by the FDA in 1998 as a treatment for ED. Since that time sales have skyrocketed to the point where sales worldwide are in excess of one billion dollars per year.

Viagra usually starts working within 30 minutes of the recommenced dose being taken. It provides a window of up to four hours during which a man can become aroused and engage in sex. It has proven to be safe and effective for millions of men. However, there are the rumors floating around about it such as the one about it being just an aphrodisiac. An aphrodisiac is designed to stimulate or increase sexual desire. ED is not a desire problem because men with ED usually have the desire for sex, but they can’t perform. Viagra alleviates the performance problem.

Another rumor is that Viagra frequently causes men to have an erection lasting in excess of four hours. This is a possible side effect of Viagra but it very rarely occurs and can happen with the use of any ED medication. In addition, Viagra is not known for greatly increasing heart attacks in men who take it.

In fact, studies have shown that Viagra is effective and safe in combination with most drugs used to prevent heart attacks by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. Viagra however can’t be taken in conjunction with medicines used to treat angina. This is because the combination of those drugs with Viagra could cause a sudden and sharp drop in blood pressure.

There are also reports that Viagra is effective for women by increasing the blood flow to the genital area. There have been several studies that appear to indicate that this may be true, but the issue is still under study. The FDA has not yet approved Viagra for use by women but doctors are not prohibited from prescribing it for their female patients and some are doing so.

One very dangerous rumor that has started about Viagra is that it is safe to use as a recreational drug. This is not true and Viagra should never be used for such purposes. To begin with, the dose of Viagra for each patient may be different and should be fixed by a physician after a physical examination. Such factors are taken into account as the age of the patient and health issues such as kidney or liver problems that may cause Viagra to be prescribed at a lower dose. The frequency of the dose may also be limited.

The patient should never try increasing the dosage on his own. It must be done so by the physician. Of course, people who use Viagra as a recreational drug usually don’t pay any attention to the dosage requirements and this can not only intensify potential side effects, but also cause ones that are usually not associated with Viagra.

In addition, recreational users of Viagra often obtain it without a prescription off  websites and the drugs they are getting may be counterfeit. Even with the real Viagra, there is no way of knowing what the side effects will be if it is taken with illegal drugs such as ecstasy or cocaine. .

Finally, there is no generic form of Viagra on the market that is just as good as the original. In fact the FDA has not approved any generic Viagra and therefore the ones being offered on websites are both illegal and fakes. They may contain some ingredients similar to those in Viagra but are often mixed under unsafe conditions and will prove to be both ineffective and dangerous.
