Voice Recorders Consumer's Guide

In our modern age, the way we handle everything has changed and that includes the ways in which we remind ourselves of important tasks, events and things to do. At one time, the best method we have available to us was to simply jot a note down and place it in a prominent place where we would be sure to see it. As times have changed, we now have more devices available to us to ensure that we remember every detail relating to our hectic lives.

One of the newer technologies that have proven to be successful are voice recorders. These popular devices allow consumers to record information relating to almost anything and are commonly used for the purpose of recording meetings, phone conversations and memos. Of course, the one basic requirement that you must adhere to when utilizing voice recorders in order to comply with legal requirements is that you obtain permission from the other party or parties involved before proceeding with the recording.

The main difference between voice recorders and standard tape recorders is that information stored on voice recorders is stored in a .wav or .wma format. This allows consumers several options such as either listening to the information on the recorder or even transferring it to their PC where they can play it back, send it to others in the form of an e-mail attachment or archive it. With the newer voice recognition software, it's also even possible to transcribe the information into text documents.

There are several different types of voice recorders available on the market today. Many of them combined along with other types of digital media products.

The first category is digital voice recorders. They are available in a number of different models with various features including desktop stands with speakers and controls that allow for easy playback. You can also find models that will connect to your computer through a USB port. Software is also available that makes it possible to download and upload audio files between the recorder and a computer. The price range on digital voice recorders ranges from around $150 to $300 or more.

Voice recording capabilities is also available on some MP3 players through built-in voice recording software and microphones. The one thing that you should be aware of is that these devices commonly record in mono instead of stereo. Depending on your intentions regarding the use of the information you record, this may or may not be a disadvantage. Devices will more available storage space will allow consumers to record longer segments. The great advantage to these devices is that they can be transferred to a computer through a USB connection or flash memory card. Depending on the model that is purchased, it may be necessary to purchase a microphone; if the model does not include a built-in microphone. Additional microphones run about $60.

PDAs are also very popular for voice recording capabilities. While not all PDA models have voice recording capabilities, those that do run around $300 or more. Like other device with the ability to record audio, many PDAs also have the ability to transfer the information to a consumer's computer. Similar to MP3 players, the length of recording depend upon the amount of memory the product contains.

The amount, length and frequency of recordings you intend to make will greatly influence which product would best suit your needs. For example, consumers that make numerous recordings and need the best audio quality available find that a digital voice recorder is preferred. However, if you are only interested in transcribing or playing back notes, a MP3 player or PDA should suffice just fine.
