Wash The Rain Away With Your Clear Umbrella
|
An umbrella is one of those items where it is hard to determine whether it is carried purely for functionality or to make a fashion statement. It has been used by the higher classes back to ancient times. If you look at ancient lineage for Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, Africa, and China in each case you will discover the umbrella. In fact it often symbolized royalty or authority. It eventually became a fashion accessory for the women and European women were well known for their ability to use the umbrella as a device for flirting. It was also used as a shield to keep indecent propositions at bay. In the early days umbrella hardware was often made out of whalebone or wood and the umbrella itself made from canvas. Carved ebony or ivory where very common on the handles. The Chinese invented the first umbrella that would collapse. They were also the first to invent a waterproof umbrella that used wax and lacquer. During this same time period it was determined a parasol was to be used to protect oneself from the sun while an umbrella was designed to protect oneself from the rain. Parasols were often covered in beautiful lace or silk while umbrellas use a more functional material that will prevent the rain from penetrating. Jona Hanway thought the idea of a male using an umbrella was fashionable and thus during the 18th century he was the first to set the stage for it to be okay for a man to use an umbrella. Soon coffee houses throughout England provided umbrellas so that their customers could come and go during the rainy days in comfort and it wasn't long at all before England became the major exporter of umbrellas around the world. The design we use today actually dates back to 1852 and was the work of Samuel Fox. Today polyester or nylon are generally used because they last so long. Colorful umbrellas are great for the beach, the backyard, the patio, or to spice up your life just a little. A clear umbrella is a safe bet for work and more formal outings. If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain you'll appreciate the value of a good umbrella. There's nothing more annoying than getting wet and then having to stay in those damp wet clothes. Instead your umbrella can help keep you dry and comfortable even in the most torrential downpour. An umbrella is as important to protect you from the rain as it is protect you from the sun but a clear umbrella is of no use for the sun. It is however a great choice for the rain and it provides a bit of interesting dynamic for walking in the rain.
