Watch Out For Mystery Shopping Money Suckers

Unfortunately, there is a sucker born every minute. This does not refer to the victims of scams, rather the scammers themselves. Like leaches they suck their victims bank accounts dry. Their latest victim is the stay at home mom. Their latest front is mystery shopping employment. How do they do it? They use an old tactic, offer something that is too good to be true. Most people know anything that looks too good to be true probably is. However, mystery shopping employment scams seem to overcome peoples suspicions by enticing victims with ads promising them a job where they can make good money in their spare time. This is exactly the kind of job a stay at home mom is looking for. These mystery shopping employment ad scams appeal to them because spare time is only what they have available. And to top it off with good money is icing on the cake. However, it is not true and instead of making good money, the victim ends up losing a lot of it.

Do not be confused. Mystery shopping employment is a true profession. Many popular customer service businesses hire a mystery shopping employment agency to evaluate the customers experience. Mystery shoppers or secret shoppers pose as real customers and rate a store on different criteria, such as appearance, helpfulness, quality of products, and bathroom cleanliness. Many mystery shoppers are stay at home moms looking to earn some extra money. Please take note the word extra.

However, most victims get excited about ads promising them good money and call the number listed to find out more information. Most people are skeptical at first, but when the mystery shopping employment agency sounds professional over the phone, the victim is hooked. Then the supposedly mystery shopping employment agency gives the caller instructions on what to do next.

A typical mystery shopping employment scam works like this. The victim is sent a check, usually with a high dollar amount up in the thousands. The victim is told to keep a low amount (i.e. 100 dollars) for the first mystery shopping mission and send the rest back to the mystery shopping employment agency for some bogus reason like training fees. The victim, thinking that they are a secret shopper, goes on their first mission to a big box retailer. The whole time they are paying attention about every detail while taking mental notes. When they are done, they go home, write up a report, and wait for the next instructions.

A few days later, the victim finds out that the check had bounced. As it turns out the check was a perfect fake with a routing number and a bank account number. Even the bank was fooled. So, the bank credits the victims account and the victim sends the money off to the seemingly mystery shopping employment company. Checks take a few days to process, so it takes a few days to discover fake checks. Accordingly, the victims next move is to call the mystery shopping company. However, at this point in time the number is always disconnected.

Now the stay at home mom feels like she had been robbed. Well, she should feel that way because that is exactly what happened. The bank is not at fault because the victim should have waited for the check to clear before sending out money. On the other hand, the victim should have never fallen for this mystery shopping employment scam in the first place. Mystery shopping employment is a good way to make extra money, but be aware of mystery shopping scams.
