What Alzheimers Sundowners Is
|
There is a name for the bouts your relative feels, and this name is Sundowners. Sundowners actually stands for the bouts of agitation these people feel as the sun goes down and the night is about to come. Whats happening? In order to explain the situation further, we need to explain a little about long time habits. We all know how we become accustomed to a lot of things. If you are used to drink your coffee every morning at 7 a.m. sharp for ten years, when that hour strikes and you do not remember what was that you should have done, you may become very upset and agitated. Also, this will not only be a memory, but also a need to do something. This is about how a person with Alzheimers feels. People with Alzheimers had normal lives, too, before the disease struck them. This means that they also have their habits, but they cannot remember what they had to do, so they feel very nervous and agitated. For many of them, the moment when the sun came down was the moment when they did something, like preparing dinner for the family, or taking the kids from school, and so on. This is the Sundowners Syndrome, and it is quite painful to watch. You can do something so do not despair. Help your relative to pass over that particular time of day in an easier manner. For instance, light up the house, so the natural light fading outside is not so easy to notice. The sufferer will feel less what hour is really, and the pressure will subdue. Also, if you want to block more the light from outside, getting some mini blinds is a great idea. Bright colors help a lot and they will maintain the feeling that it is daylight for a longer time. Another good solution is to engage your loved one in an activity that they used to do at that hour. It will help them calm down. Reducing the level of activity also helps, so keep this solution in mind. Now that you know what you are dealing with, you need to find a solution that works for you and for your loved one.
