What Causes Pain Between Shoulder Blades

If you experience pain between shoulder blades for some time, you should see a doctor. But, if you want to know more about the causes, here is some information on the matter.

Cause number one: gall bladder pain

When you experience gall bladder pain, it is not unusual that the pain from the abdomen radiates upper, between the shoulder blades. This illness also causes nausea, vomiting and gas. When an attack occurs, it may take up to several hours until the sufferer gets any better. Because these symptoms are common to more than one disease, it cannot be quite well identified.

Causes number two and three: arthritis and disc diseases

If earlier we mentioned the kind of pain that radiates upwards from a lower point, in arthritis or disc disease like pains, the pain between shoulders blades comes from the neck. The body is severely affected by pain, that seems to engulf the arms, the hands, and even the head. A severe condition that is associated with neck pains caused by arthritis or disc disease is known as torticollis, in which the neck is turned forcibly on one side.

A weakening sensation can accompany the pain that radiates through the body and the arms and fingers get a numbing feeling.

Cause number four: angina pectoris

The condition named angina pectoris is usually accompanied by incredible chest pains, in which it seems like the whole sternum tries to constrict itself. These pains radiate in the body, especially in the arms, but they can also be felt in the stomach, in the throat, or between shoulder blades. Angina pectoris is usually caused by intensive physical activity, stress, cold or a fat meal, but it subsides as the cause disappears.

Cause number five: liver cancer

Liver cancer is accompanied by many symptoms, in its early stages, like a lump felt on the right side, just under the rib cage, discomfort in the same area, changing the skin color to a yellow tint and a feeling of full stomach. Another well known symptom is the pain between the shoulders blades that is felt.

Cause number six: esophageal cancer

Pain between shoulder blades is usually felt when a person suffers from esophageal cancer. The most encountered symptom of this disease, however, is the sensation that the food gets stuck in the throat. The condition is many times accompanied by pains when swallowing, eating disorders, coughing with blood and, one of the most serious, aortic dissection. When this last symptom occurs, a very sharp pain between shoulder blades appears, and the patient must be taken to the hospital immediately.
