What Is Commitment Phobia And What Can Be Done About It?

Commitment phobia is that thing that affects people that manifest a constant fear about getting involved in a relationship or that do not like to commit to anything. Still, these individuals are not the kind of people that simply like independence and the feeling of having no ties whatsoever; instead, they want to be involved in a relationship, just that they fear too much about it.

You can recognize people with commitment phobia by the words they say. For instance, women that say that all men cannot be trusted are suffering from it, as well as men that consider that every woman they meet will try to get their money.

As we already showed you above, commitment phobia is not related to gender: women, equally as men, have the same problem of committing to a relationship.

Fear of intimacy

Intimacy is more than just sharing the bed for one night. This may be considered the right thing by those with commitment phobia, because it gives them the illusion that they are intimate with another human being, although it is for just a fleeting moment. Instead, real intimacy can be really acquired just in a marriage where the two partners get to know each other very well. These people are more into obtaining instant gratification through sex then building up a strong and reliable relationship.

What relations are to these people?

Love and understanding cannot exist outside a healthy relationship. Still, the person suffering from commitment phobia, wants to share such feelings with someone, while being afraid to get involved. They do not intend to involve in a marriage or in any long term relationships, because of different reasons. Some may have experienced abusive relationships before, or trauma during childhood that prevents them from acting normal towards developing feelings of sharing and love with another human being. Abusive relationships in the family may have cause such issues, and the person that was once a child witnessing such behaviors, now replicates them as an adult.

Any statistics will show you that people are more happy when they share their lives with someone else. The commitment phobia has its strong roots in the way the relationships are seen. For some, this condition is considered to be a healthy fear about jumping head first into a relationship. It is true, to a certain extend, that is why you should first try to make little steps towards knowing new people, without risking too much of your feelings in the first place.

While trying to build up new relationships, the fear will be reduced and you will be able to get involved into more profound human bonding. It is not wise to push too much when you feel that you are not ready to do that. In the end, the gain will be yours, and you will have a special someone to share your entire life.

The thing is, when we talk about commitment phobia, that when we love someone else, we are only responsible for what we feel, and not about what the other feels, which is beyond our control.

Therapy is possible, medications exist. But it is up to the person that suffers from commitment phobia to understand what is really happening and how to solve it. Unfortunately, this may not be so easy, so that person must be prepared to invest time and effort into this.
