What Is The Link Between Marijuana And Suicide?

Why do some people kill themselves? Are there any warning signs for suicidal attempts? What causes suicidal tendencies among individuals? Is there a link between suicidal tendencies and illegal drugs like marijuana?

Research studies show that suicidal tendencies are partly affected by tobacco, marijuana and alcohol use. They increase the chance of making a person think about taking his own life. Marijuana is an illegal drug, that although it can deliver a short term euphoric feeling, it is very risky. The person will most likely feel anxious and depressed after the euphoric effect wears off. Anxiety and depression, plus the guilt of having used an illegal drug, are risk factors that can trigger suicide.

There are those who develop mental problems because of constant use of marijuana. Some who already have some forms of mental problem and still use marijuana aggravate their case. Even if marijuana is used irregularly, there is still the risk of having suicidal tendencies. Because the effect of marijuana will eventually wear off and the user will be subjected to the after-math which are anxiety and depression.

Suicide Among Marijuana Users

There are various forms of illegal drugs and marijuana is on the top list. The initial euphoric feeling brought about by marijuana eventually decreases if marijuana is used on a regular basis. Remember that after the “high” feeling, the “low” feeling immediately follows. As the person becomes more addicted to marijuana, the “high” feeling decreases while the “low” feeling increases. When a person feels very low, he is more prone to suicide. What some marijuana users do is increase the dosage of what they normally take to achieve higher effect.

It is ironic that some people use marijuana to help them cope up with depression and insomnia but the fact is that it is marijuana that actually causes these problems. Ironic and a pity that marijuana users lack information about the drug that they are smoking.

It is an extremely urgent need, therefore, to disseminate information about marijuana and other illegal drugs. Suicides will be avoided if people stop using marijuana. Drug education is vital. Teenagers and even kids are at risk. Drug rehabilitation centres provide information about illegal drugs such as marijuana. However, you don’t need to go to a drug rehabilitation centre to get information, there are loads of drug information on the internet as well.

Suicide is partly to be blamed on illegal drugs and unless the use of these illegal drugs is stopped, we can’t expect suicide rates to go down.
