What Is The Main Fertilizer Ingredient?
|
There are actually three main ingredients that can be found in almost all fertilizers although the quantity of each will vary. Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium are these three ingredients. The first number will always be nitrogen followed by phosphorus and then the potassium. The numbers you see on the bag will read 10-10-10, or any such combination. In the case of 10-10-10 it means that there are equal parts of each of the three ingredients. If the number read 10-5-5 it would mean there were ten parts of nitrogen to 5 parts of phosphorus and potassium. There are three forms of fertilizer which are dry, soluble, and time released. Dry is fairly self explanatory while soluble is dissolved in water and time release releases itself over time and can be dry or soluble. Time released formulas are a great choice for plants that have already started to grow because it slowly and continuously releases nutrients to that they receive a constant source of food. Slow releasing fertilizers cost more but they can last as much as three months saving you time. They are very easy to use and you don't have to worry about regularly fertilizing. Soluble fertilizers are nice if you like to get right into the care of your lawn, garden, and flower beds by feeding them regularly. Just follow the instructions provided on the packaging. Nitrogen will promote the growth of your lawn and plants and it also promotes foliage. You will often see it referred to as N. Phosphorus promotes the development of a good root system and will be shown as P while potassium helps build resistance to disease and it improves flowering. It will be shown as K. Many fertilizers will also have magnesium, calcium, sulfur, iron, manganese, zinc, boron, and molybdenum, which are all active ingredients which promote growth and healthy plants. Fertilizers will also have fillers or inter ingredients that help stop the fertilizer from getting hard and chunky. Although they have no nutritional value they help make the product useable and store better. There are many different ways to apply fertilizer. What's most important is to follow the directions provided on the fertilizer bag. It is important to follow precisely. Sometimes there may be more of one ingredient included than another or one ingredient may be left out of the equation. Knowing what the fertilizer mix you have has for active ingredients is important but knowing what your soil needs is also important so that you use the right product. Don't forget that organic fertilizers are also growing in popularity. There are a variety of different products on the market produced by various manufacturers. If organic fertilizer interests you do a little research to find the one most appropriate to your needs. Now you know that the main fertilizer ingredient is nitrogen but you also know a whole lot more about fertilizers and what they do.
