Love is tough. So tough that the gates of hell cannot prevail against it. Love is giving, expecting nothing in return. Love is painful, and costly. Love is kind in the face of spite. Love hopes in the midst of despair. Love endures when emotion has long since passed away. Love is not blind, but sees all and yet forgives despite what it sees. Love is a wife staying by her paralysed husband for years, bathing him, feeding him, comforting and supporting him, even though he has so little to offer in return. Love is a father with a severely retarded son, proudly taking him to town to do the shopping, feeling only gratitude to God for considering him worthy to take care of this boy. He happily endures the stares of strangers, because he loves his son. Love is a man who gives up the girl of his dreams, because he knows that she will be happier with another man. He thinks not of himself, but puts his lady friend's wellfare and future happiness far above his own. No, he's not foolish. He has just learned the true meaning of love. Love is a man who sacrifices his career and financial gains to be with his wife more, because she is not well and she needs him to be close by. He battles to get by each month, but it's worth it, because his wife is happy and contented. Love is a woman who takes her husband back after he's had an affair, and continues to love him, and builds a marriage out of the wreckage he made. Love is not easy, or cosy, or comfortable. At times it can be thorny, and your heart can be pierced by pain and your eyes burn with tears. But these things are endured because we know that they are but stepping stones to a greater good. They are rough chariots taking us to a better world. At the end of the ride we find forgiveness, healed relationships, a subterranean joy that gurgles deeply inside our souls. We find that life has meaning and purpose, as we remove our eyes from ourselves and start seeing the needs in others. Love is not about us. And yet, when we love unselfishly, realisation of joy slowly dawns upon our existence. Loving others benefits us in subtle, whispering ways, like a soft mist that surrounds us without us being aware of it's coming. We don't know when or how we got happy; we just are. Love is an ideal worth striving for. An ideal that's not so far off. It's only as far away as our courage will allow us to travel. Like a big battle: the possibility of pain is real and looming, but so is the prize of victory! Selfless love has it's great rewards. Love for all you're worth. It's a solid investment in life, and the dividends are eternal.
