What To Consider When Buying Desk Chairs
|
Sitting down on the job has never been more serious than it is these days with more and more workers spending their day in the sitting position a variety of injuries have come to light. Suddenly injuries in the wrist, hands, and arms have become very common. Then there are also neck and back soft tissue injuries which are occurring all the time. In fact all of these injuries are occurring at an alarming rate. Sadly many of these injuries could easily be eliminated if just a little bit of time was taken to ensure that the best chair for the job is chosen. 1. The Right Size You might be surprised to discover that office chairs come in a variety of sizes designed to fit all different body sizes from short to tall and small to big. By purchasing a chair that is the correct size from floor to seat you will eliminate many of these injuries. 2. Adjust It Never buy a chair that doesn't adjust. You should be able to adjust the height of the chair as well as the position of the arm rests, and even the angle of the set. If the chair has a back rest it needs to adjust to ensure you get the correct support especially in the lumbar area. A correct fit can eliminate a lot of back and neck problems. 3. Pad It Up You might be surprised to discover just how important padding is to your overall comfort. Your chair needs to have at least 2 inches of padding if you plan to be using it for most of the day. The padding should be high density foam because if it is not in less than a couple of months it will have flattened itself out. Proper padding eliminates numbness in the legs caused by poor circulation, discomfort to the tailbone, and even a sore butt from sitting on the hard surface. 4. Back Support Proper lumbar support will ensure that back injuries are minimized. This is especially true if a good lumbar back support is combined with one that is adjustable allowing the angle of the seat to be adjusted to fit the curvature of the back correctly. If the lumbar itself can be adjusted it's certainly a feature worth paying a few extra dollars for. 5. Roll Me Over Casters on a chair are an absolute must. They allow the chair to be very smoothly adjusted to the correct position. There's nothing worse than trying to drag a chair into position while you're sitting in it with no casters on the base. It's not a pretty site and it's not good for the back or shoulders. You need to make sure you choose the correct style of caster for the floor type or carpet type. 6. Arm Rests Positioned correctly will reduce repetitive strain injuries such as carpel tunnel syndrome. Each year these injuries are responsible for hundreds of lost hours in productivity. Yet something as simple as the right type of arm rest that is positioned correctly can reduce these types of injuries by as much as 30%. Understanding the importance of these six areas is a great way to ensure that the injuries in your office remain minimal. After all you don't want to be a statistic when it's as simple as choosing the right desk chairs for your staff. About The Author: Joanne is an author of Decorz.com.
