What Would We Do Without The Auto?
|
Horse drawn carriages are the oldest modes of transportation, other than walking, of course. Animals pulled carts and chariots as early as 3500 BC. It is believed that the very modern first horse drawn carriage was created in Hungary in the 15th century to bring a princess to her wedding, and then it could only be steered by servants who pulled it at the side to change direction. As the technology of the horse drawn carriage began to include better suspension for steering, roads were made to be more easily navigated and rides became much more comfortable. It is very hard to say just what was the first automobile, and who invented it. In 1769, Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot of France created the first self propelled, steam road vehicle. It was only able to go just over 2 miles per hour. One of the first gas fueled cars was created by Karl Benz of Germany in 1883. It is one of the most famous because it was, in fact, the first vehicle that was affordable as well as mass produced. Henry Ford is probably the most famous name in American automobile history, because his automobile was the most inexpensive and mass produced, and his worked were still paid well. He started his company in America, and changed the way Americans manufactured things forever. Never before had there been assembly lines. Ford both developed and refined assembly lines, making mass production easy and as well as very cheap. When Ford's Ford Model T, or Tin Lizzie first became popularized in 1908, more and more cars steadily filled the roads. Ford's major goal was to create a car large enough for whole families to enjoy together on outings and trips, though easy for anyone to own and take care of. People of any income could afford the Ford Model T, dramatically changing the way Americans moved. Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903, and it is still going strong today, and still creating cars at reasonable prices for families to spend time together. For over a hundred years, Americans have been enjoying cars for work and for pleasure in their free time. It has never been so easy to bring a family together and shorten distances between friends and relatives. The automobile is one of the most influential inventions in American history.
