What You Can Do With A Laser Engraver

Ever wondered what exactly you can do with a laser engraver? Trying to determine whether it's worth it for you to purchase and engraving machine? Absolutely!! After all you are only limited by your imagination.

Every day it seems there are new uses for the laser that are discovered. But some of the most common uses include pens, ornaments, frames, clocks, wood boxes, keepsakes, coasters, and marble plaques to name just a few items. That really only scratches the surface of what you can do with your laser. The following materials are easily laser engraved.

1. WoodWood was actually one of the first materials that were used by laser engraving machines. Hard woods like oak, maple, or mahogany require less than 10 watts to produce great results.

Softwoods can also be burned but require a little bit more practice to get an even burn. Use the quickest cut speed with the lowest power while a fan is blowing to help get an even cut.

2. Natural MaterialsLeathers, latex rubbers, stone, marble, and crystal are all natural materials that can be laser engraved. You need to understand the settings that are required by each material to get a clean cut.

3. PlasticsThere are all kinds of plastics on the market such as sheet plastic, acrylic plastic, and cast resins which all are easy to use the laser on. Plastics like thermoform and styrene do not laser well as they tend to melt. There are even special plastics that have been designed specifically for lasering.

4. MetalsMetals are the oldest material used for engraving yet they are also the poorest material choice for the modern day laser. They are easily scribed with hand tools but they do not laser well. The problem is that metals are good electric conductors so when the laser is used they reflect the beam away and the cut is marginal. The best you can do is use a high power laser and still the effects won't be great.

5. GlassDoes better with sand blasting or cutting because it doesn't turn gaseous very easily. When a laser hits glass it tends to fracture. This is definitely a task for the pros.

Online sites have excellent engraving machines to choose from. A much better choice than what local businesses might offer. You need to remember that you get what you pay for so if the price sound too good to be true it's likely that it is.

Today laser engraving has changed the way we engrave materials. That's why it is so important to choose the laser engraver that will work best with the material type you will be engraving.
