Fish generally do not live in aquariums, they live in lakes and rivers. Obviously, there is a larger surface area in lakes and rivers than a tiny aquarium for the fish to swim in; therefore, there is less oxygen in the tan for the fish to be able to survive and breathe. If you are planning to take care of some fish, then you should know a few things about aquarium pumps for your future fish to live a long time. What is aeration? It is the process where oxygen is provided in the water. How do you make aeration? The aquarium must always have circulation or movement, the ideal way of generating movement at all times is by using an aquarium pump, but tubing, air stone, or another ornament can work as well. By using anyone of these ornaments, it helps create bubbles, which in return generates oxygen for your fish. You can also use power filters or canisters to let oxygen in the tank, I find using bio wheel canisters or power filters work the best. The canister or power filter generates oxygen by creating currents. There are three aquarium air pumps to choose from, diaphragms, bubble wands or air stones, and piston pumps. These different pumps create small currents, also known as the surface area of the water. The small currents are the movements of water, this creates oxygen. Air valves will be essential because in order for the air pump to work, you must connect the air valves to an air stone, or the thing you want to provide power for. If you have a fresh water aquarium, the aquarium you purchase usually has an aquarium air pump for the oxygen to get in the water. If you have a salt water tank, the aquariums usually do not use a pump; instead, a bio-wheel filter or protein summer is used. Of course every aquarium has different fish, and the device you are going to use will vary depending on the size and fish of your tank. Sometimes, people just end up using wands or air stones as the source to get oxygen in the tank, but mainly people use filtration systems. I highly recommend not buying a cheap aquarium air pump because the sound can be a problem. If you are very picky about sound, get a filter that is electronically adjustable. I also suggest not purchasing a very powerful pump if you do not need it, the more powerful the pump is; hence, the stronger the noise is. The sound of the aquarium air pump can become an annoyance to you. Depending on where you place the pump, it can make different noises or even no noises at all. I suggest you test out where to place the pump. When you are hooking up the air pump, find the closet power outlet to plug the pump in. Insert the air stone or another ornament in the other end of the pump and place it in your tank. For most of the pumps available today, you put them in the water, but for some pumps, this is not the case. So when you are assembling your pumps, be sure to read the instructions. Aquarium air pumps are also a great way to decorate your tank. An air stone is an ornament that shaped into a cylinder, it is made out of porous material. The material actually breaks apart the air flow and allows bubbles to generate oxygen by rising to the surface area of the water. Bubble wands work differently from air stones, but have the same purpose. The bubble wand is placed in the back corner of you tank, a huge amount of bubbles are produced by the wand, this brings movement into the tank by exchanging the oxygen at the top of the tank. Like air pumps, air curtains are made out of a porous material. They are flexible air tubes create bubbles to let oxygen in the tank, it actually can be wound into different shapes to make your tank look great. There is also a cleaning ring, which helps reduced the clogging. Having fish as a pet is much less of hassle than any other animal, and they also serve as a fabulous decoration for your home.
