What are the main benefits of cosmetic surgery?

As with all things in life, there is a black and white side of having cosmetic surgery. This controversial subject has been, and still is, on the first pages of many publications. The series of benefits that comes with having cosmetic surgery done is also followed by a list of risks and potential problems. The package of beauty also comes with pain. May celebrities these days have taken up on plastic surgery and the craze has caught up with the general public. But is all what it’s cracked up to be?

Let’s start with the risks of cosmetic surgery. First of all, there is always a chance that an operation goes wrong. No matter what the doctor say, no matter how advanced the technology is, there is always a slight risk. Of course, we live our entire lives subjecting ourselves to risk, such as getting in the car and driving to work is a risk, isn’t it? Sometimes, even though the operation seems to be a success, the side effects start to appear after months or even years. There are some cases of celebrities going through expensive and well rated cosmetic surgery procedures and they are now struggling to hide the side effects.

It sound pretty bad so far, but let’s have a look at the benefits of cosmetic surgery. Success rates are usually high, in the 90% range. Chances are that, if you go by the rules and guidelines suggested by the cosmetic surgeon, your operation will be a success. We mentioned the start and celebrities that had bad experiences with cosmetic surgery. Well, it’s almost like abusing medication – if you use the indicated dosage you will see improvements, if you go overboard and drink the whole box you might get into trouble. You must know your limits and listen to your doctor, your body and life is at risk when you are abusing medication.

The main benefits of cosmetic surgery are important, and they explain the popularity of this practice all over the world. Someone who had cosmetic surgery did it because there was an element related to their appearance that bothered them. Small breasts, a long nose, puffy eyelids – these “small” details can become obsessions with who ever deals with them every day. Removing the negative element boosts self esteem levels and increases the confidence in your own capabilities. It also makes you feel comfortable around other people – and this social factor is of extreme importance to everyone of us.

Many people often go into cosmetic surgeons’ office and request different celebrity looks, such as wanting the combination of Beyoncé’s eyes, Angelina Jolie’s lips and Jennifer Aniston’s nose. It has never occurred to them that the features of celebrities complement the rest of the features on their face as well. By having a combination of strong and dominant features on one face, it may stir up a recipe for disaster. Remember beauty is in internal and not external.

Social acceptance is one of the main reasons why people undergo cosmetic surgery. We belong in groups and we need to feel good in them. So, the main reason for cosmetic surgery is not a medical one, but a psychological and social one. Cosmetic surgery is the only chance that you have if you want to eliminate such a problem. Psychological counseling might also work, and you could get accustomed to your “undesired” body part. However, the effects of counseling are limited in time and only work on short term basis. If you are thinking of having cosmetic surgery, make sure to analyze the costs and benefits. If you feel like this is your only choice of getting the position you want and deserve in your social or work group, then go head and do it!
