It has been often observed, in many people, development of many small pouches in their colon lining protruding though the muscles of the wall of intestines. Such pouches, often known as diverticula, cause no pain until and unless they inflame. If these diverticula are infected and inflamed, such situation is known as diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is mainly caused when the undigested matter accumulates in these pouches and causes irritation. The flow of blood is restricted in the area and hence making it more prone to the attack by bacteria. This results in restricting bowel’s movements and thus leads to cramping, diarrhea and constipation. Many researches have found that this disease occurs in lineage. It is more common in the old ages when the intestinal lining is weakened. Its symptoms include diarrhea and constipation. The problem cycles from diarrhea to constipation alternately. Diverticulitis also causes cramps in the abdominal region. It also causes nausea and frequent vomiting. You may also experience chills along with fever. Diverticulitis is often mistaken as irritable bowel syndrome. To eliminate this confusion, one needs to go for a rectal exam or colonoscopy. Its treatments include complete bed rest and a liquid diet. If the disease keeps reoccurring, the doctor may advice for a surgery to remove the affected portions. The diverticula may burst sometimes and spill out the undigested matter to the abdominal cavity. This may result in peritonitis. In such a case, patient is required to undergo an antibiotic therapy. Nutrition also plays a vital role in diverticulitis. A healthy diet helps in controlling this illness. Fiber is very important in this disorder. Its required intake varies from 20 grams to 40grams daily. However, during the attack, it is advisable to have a low-fiber diet. Fiber helps in preventing constipation. Along with fiber, water is also necessary. Tea and fresh juices are also beneficial in this situation. These liquids control the building up of toxic wastes that lead to inflammation. The diet should be rich in protein content. It is better to leave the consumption of meat, fried food, spices and dairy products for some time. Plenty of green leaves that are rich in vitamins should also be obtained. Vitamins are good for proper digestion and also reduce inflammation. However during an attack, you should always switch to liquid diet for good assimilation. If the problem is minor, taking supplements is a good option till the symptoms subside.
