When should you tell your boss you're pregnant?

Whether you just started a new job, or have been working in the same place for years, telling a boss you're expecting can bring a flurry of emotions. The general rule of thumb for most pregnancies is to wait until the second trimester to tell anyone other than close family that you're expecting. This is usually a good time because you have passed the critical first few weeks and are likely out of the miscarriage danger zone. If you are having a rough time with morning sickness, you may feel it only fair to share your news with your supervisor. Different jobs carry different levels of risk and responsibility and only you can know the right time. It's important to remember that not everyone will share your enthusiasm for a newborn. Contact your HR department to become familiar with policies and procedures of pregnancy, doctor’s visits and maternity leave.
