When your House Gives Buyers the Creeps

We've all had the experience of walking into a place and feeling as though something was not right. Our skin tingles, our hearts beat faster, and a knot forms in the stomach. Usually this occurs without any rational explanation for the feelings.

We call this inexplicable fear 'the creeps,' and we use it to describe how we feel when we encounter people or places that are covered in negative energy. It's a good idea to trust your instincts when they're telling you to get away, but what do you do if you're trying to sell a house that creeps out potential buyers?

If you or your family has felt ill at ease in your home, then you can be sure that others will find the atmosphere unsettling as well. In order to clear the air, so to speak, you need to figure out what's causing the negative vibes in the first place. This may not be easy, but you need to know what you're dealing with in order to get rid of it.

If an uncanny feeling has been in the house since the day you moved in, it's possible that something traumatic happened there in the past, and the energy imprinted itself on the property. It might be interesting to do a little research into the history of the house to see if anything bad ever happened there, or whether the land itself was ever used as a burial ground.

Residual hauntings are what it's called when a violent event in the past has literally impressed itself upon the physical surroundings. The event then repeats itself like a looping video clip. These types of hauntings are difficult to get rid of because there's no intelligent force behind it. It's simply negative energy that's circling around.

Some experts believe that redecorating can help because it shifts the stagnant energy. Scrub the walls and floors really well, bring in fresh plants, and remove any furniture that belonged to the previous owners. You want to eliminate anything that may still have negative residue on it and replace it with items that bring a sense of joy to the room. Paint the walls, bring in new art work and flooring, and consider following feng shui principles when redesigning the space. This will increase the amount of positive energy present in the home and counteract the negative.

If you think there might be an actual spirit in the home that's causing the off-putting vibes, you'll need to up the ante a little bit. Burning a sage smudge stick is one way to literally smoke out the ghost. Wave the smoke in every corner of the house while asking the spirit to leave. If you're Christian, you can also have a priest come in to bless the house.

Consecrating the home as a sacred and safe place is an important step in clearing negative energy. It also helps to change your own attitude to the space and make you feel more at home yourself. Altering your own perception of the house can help the situation because our feelings have a great impact on the energy that surrounds us. Shake things up a bit in your home, and shake things up in yourself as well. You'll soon have a home that makes a positive impression on buyers, instead of giving them the creeps.
