Which Miter Cutter Is Right For You

Choosing a miter cutter can be a bewildering experience with all the varieties available in today's marketplace. The amount of funding you have available is an important factor in this decision. You can go as simple as a miter box and dedicated saw to as complex as a power compound miter saw or a jig for your table saw. A jig is a tool to aid in the cutting of stock with power machinery by holding it in position while you make your cut. Jigs can be made to make miter cuts for just about any type of power machinery.

Let's discuss the pros and cons of the various miter cutters available. With a miter box and saw, your outlay of money will be the least of all the options. Miter boxes are available in all sorts of material ranging from three pieces of wood fastened together with slots made at the proper angle to hardened plastic formed out of a single piece. While it is possible to find one made of metal, this would be damaging to your miter saw and is not recommended. The tighter the fit to your saw blade without binding, the better your miter cut will be.

Power miter saws are circular saws mounted on an arm that can lowered unto a base with a slot for the blade. They are adjustable for the angle and in the more expensive models, the saw can be tilted as well to allow compound miter cuts. It is easier to get an accurate cut with these miter cutters. They can be used for many other types of stock cutting as well. One will make a nice addition to any workshop because of their versatility in making all types of cuts. If your pocketbook can afford this miter cutter, then this may be the best one to purchase.

Table saws, band saws and routers, both hand held and table mounted, can be used as miter cutters by means of a jig to hold the stock in the proper position. How the jig is fastened to the machine will vary with each machine and will determine how easy it is to make a good miter cut. I think that routers are the most difficult way to make a miter cut as the router bit tends to push the stock away from itself. So while routers may give the smoothest cut, leaving little or no sanding to finish your work, they are the most difficult to use.

Considerations of how much money you afford and how much time you want to spend making your mitered work should be the major factors on which miter cutter you want to purchase. The more money you spend on your miter cutter, the less time you will have to spend making the miters and the more uses you will be able to get out of the tool. Which ever one you decide on, be sure to use it safely and wear protective eyewear when operating it. Have fun.
