Which is Better, Interior Colonial Shutters or Plantation Style Shutters?

The alternative to the ever popular plantation style shutters, interior colonial shutters, looks very similar to plantation style, but with much smaller slats and width. Both styles of shutters were introduced around the same time to help with interior home temperature control. The interior colonial shutters were introduces in cooler northern climates, while the plantation style shutters were introduced in the more tropical climates. The biggest differences between the two styles are the width and length of the slats. The plantation style shutters having wider and longer slats to allow more air in during the warmer summer months, while the interior colonial shutters being both shorter and narrower to better seal against the harsher northern climates.

Deciding which style to put into your home today does not matter so much on the weather as it did when these styles of shutters were introduced to homeowners. With modern techniques of heating and cooling, the size and width of the shutter slats has less bearing on how economically you deal with the interior temperature of your home. Nor the difference is all in how you want your home to look and whether the interior colonial style shutters or plantation style shutters will best suit your home dcor. You can get both styles made out of hardwoods or various types of composite materials to suit the dcor you choose and the effect on the environment you wish to make.

The cost of either plantation style shutters or interior colonial shutters will be relatively the same, even though the interior colonial shutters are smaller in width with two shutters in place of the one for plantation style shutters. Even when totally hand made, the amount of labor involved with the manufacture of either interior colonial shutters or plantation style shutters is approximately the same. So once again the deciding factor on whether to choose interior colonial shutters or plantation style shutters will be how that particular style will fit into the dcor of the rest of your home.

While plantation style shutters have the decided edge in popularity, judging by the comparative sales of each style, interior colonial shutters are still available for those who choose that style of dcor. Either style is much better than the Venetian style blinds that are quite common today both in appearance and for the purposes of home safety for young children. For insulation purposes the interior colonial shutters have a slight edge during winter and the plantation style shutters have that same edge during spring and fall. So the choice will ultimately fall upon which style will fit better with the interior dcor style you choose for your home.
