Why is a Couch so Important?

A couch is just an inanimate object so how could a couch contribute so greatly to our overall happiness? For many families the couch is the focal point of the entire house. Living rooms and family rooms are usually the most high traffic areas in the house and for this reason the furniture in these rooms play a variety of roles. Many people spend countless hours on their couches so it is understandable that the comfort, durability and overall functionality of their couch can have a significant effect on their lives. The obvious purpose of a couch is as a place to sit but it also acts as a place to eat, and a place to sleep. Considering all of the roles that a couch holds, makes it obvious that a couch is one of the most important pieces of furniture in the house. While, it serves so many roles and functions the couch cannot be underestimated.

Providing a comfortable place to sit is only the most basic function of a couch. Many families retire to the family room in the evening to watch television or movies or to play games and talk and the couches are there for the family members to lounge on as they enjoy each others company. Lack of couches or even couches that are uncomfortable can put a damper on the experience and make the family room less of a congregational location for the family. Instead they may assemble in smaller groups in other rooms of the house, reducing the opportunity for the whole family to participate in an activity together.

Although, kitchens and dining rooms are the ideal location for eating, many families eat their dinner in the family room on a regular basis. TV trays are often used and placed in front of the couch so that the family can dine while sitting on the couch and watching a favorite television program. While this is not an ideal situation because it does not promote the opportunity for parents and children to enjoy conversation over dinner, it does serve the purpose of combining dinner with television time. This is significant in families that put a limit on the amount of time that family members are allowed to watch television.

Couches also serve as functional beds on occasion. A couch that has a pull out bed is a natural place for a visiting friend or relative to sleep but that is not the only time that the couch is used as a bed. Children who aren’t feeling well often take naps on the family couch. Sleeping on the couch gives the luxury of being closer to their family instead of being isolated in their bedroom. It also makes them easily accessible if the parents need to administer medication periodically. The couch is just a really comfortable place to nap while watching television making it a location that is often used as a place to sleep.

Understanding all of the roles that a couch takes on, makes it easy to see that couches are a very important part of our lives. For many families the day and evening revolve around the family couches. Couches are no longer just a place to sit but they now perform a variety of other functions and are becoming more and more prominent in the lives of families. This makes it very important that couches be chosen carefully with all of their purposes in mind. This will help to ensure that the couch meets all of its expectations and provides the family with a multi-purpose piece of furniture that they will enjoy for years to come.
