These activities can add up to enough calories to help assist obese people in achieving weight loss. According to the Mayo Clinic, “There are three principal components of human energy expenditure (EE), basal metabolic rate (BMR), thermic effect of food (TEF) and activity thermogenesis. “ By breaking down human energy expenditure into these smaller components, it can be seen how exactly the human body utilizes calories that are consumed. Defining each of these components on an individual basis will help to show how increasing non-organized physical activity can help obese people lose weight. First basal metabolic rate is the rate at which a human burns calories to sustain existence. This rate is measured when the body is lying down, still upon waking, just existing. It is suggested that roughly 60% of daily caloric intake should cover BMR functions. Secondly, the thermic effect of food is the energy that the body requires to digest and process food. Approximately 10-15 percent of caloric intake covers this process. Finally activity thermogenesis is the calories that are burned when the body participates in any other activity other than laying in existences. These are calories that are burned in performing any other activity from scratching an itch to talking on the phone to running a marathon. The Mayo Clinic also states that “NEAT is highly variable and ranges from approximately 15 percent of total daily EE in very sedentary individuals to >50 percent in highly active persons. Even minor changes in physical activity throughout the day can increase daily EE by 20 percent. NEAT is impacted by environment, but is also under biological control." This study is great news for obese people who may not be able to immediately get up and move around. For those who need to lose weight before they can even begin to think about more aggressive regiments, slowly adding more movement into routines can increase metabolism. As a society, shifting from high activity jobs and daily functions to sedentary jobs and lives has been the reason most of us have put on weight. This has also lead many people on the search for the best diet pill to increase metabolism and aid in appetite suppression. The number one choice for appetite suppression by dieters is hoodia gordonii. All in all it is great news that obesity can be overcome through the incorporation of activity as well as dietary aids.
