Yorkshire Terrier

One of the smallest breeds of dog across the world is undoubtedly the Yorkshire Terrier. This little dog is actually mature at about 2 years of age and weighs generally about seven pounds or less. Early origination of this terrier is reportedly from Yorkshire, Manchester, and of Leeds from England. Also descending from Scotland as mining and textile hunting dogs. While the actual bloodlines are still somewhat sketchy in determination of exactly how the actual breed began, these pets were often adored for their skills at chasing away vermin. They make excellent guard dogs, believe it or not!

Today, this Yorkshire terrier is a popular favorite of many breeders and pet owners. Their brown coats mixed with blue/black hair and are often thought of as AKC Toys in show. Their function in this day and age is more of a pet and/or showmanship dog at various clubs worldwide. There are Terrier clubs, Yorkshire terrier art, Yorkie breeders, magazines, special Yorkie toys and clothes, collectibles, cards and calendars, books and eBooks, doggie supplies, and even professional show dogs. There are registered champions! Yorkshire terriers have become a most popular breed and it is wise to purchase a terrier from a reliable breeder rather than a puppy mill since vet bills and problems do arise more frequently with improper breeder and care of these little treasured animals.

Although the Yorkshire terrier is quite small, care for them is quite extensive. Grooming on a regular basis is needed to keep their coats manageable since they do rarely shed hair. However, not much exercise is needed, as they are often quite active indoors. Their health is also important since the Yorkshire terrier is prone to bronchitis and tooth decay. Many yorkies may have temperament problems, have allergies, suffer paralysis problems, malformed skull formations, have poor digestion, and even painful spinal problems. Proper care is essential with these tiny little pets and their life expectancy is only about fifteen years.

Many of these special small dogs have been placed in show or exhibitions with winning prize results. Obedience and training of Yorkies is very attainable, although some Yorkshire terriers do show their true stubbornness and unique temperaments. Registrations of Yorkshire terriers were at an all time high for clubs in 1990 with approximately 25,665 Yorkie registrations. No longer is the giant housedog the most opportune pet to have.

Unfortunately the downsides of any dog breed are the puppy mills, which are supplying many pet stores, and the growing need for rescue of these precious animals. Puppy mills are breeding places that on a whole, do not practice standards for breeding even the smallest of dogs such as the Yorkie. There are various breeds that are born without eyes or limbs, or have special internal problems that require surgery or unique expensive care. Rescue centers provide a stable environment for these saved little friends and will shower these animals with love, rehabilitation, medical care, and then find them a loving foster home. Support for these rescue centers is in short supply, whereas funds and people are needed to help them help Yorkshire terriers or other breeds special care and the help that they need. Many of these centers, such as United Yorkie Rescue, founded on August 5, 2002, are also 501 (c) (3) organizations which mean your donations are tax deductible.

Some people have labeled some Yorkshire terriers as Tea cup Yorkies and Tri-colored Yorkies. These two labels for the distinctive differences of particular looking terriers are nothing but that. There isn't an actual breed of teacup Yorkie, they just happen to be smaller in size and usually have more medical problems associated with them. Tri-colored Yorkies are NOT rare since they happen to be a mixed breed originated in Germany. Labels have been designed to try to increase the purchase price from unknowing individuals who do not necessarily understand this. Keep in mind a female Yorkshire terrier can be impregnated by more than one male dog, thus creating some mixed breed pups in the litter.

All in all, from the famous to the champion of Yorkie Terriers, they are spirited little dogs that are enjoyed by many owners and breeders across the world.
