Your Options For Porsche Seats
|
Almost all of the Porsche stock seat were considered comfortable with the ability to support for an entire day of driving. The only exception was the Speedster seats which had a reputation for looking exceptionally well but providing little comfort. But all of the older Porsche seats were lacking when it came to head restraints. Head restraints have been proven to prevent whiplash if you are involved in an accident where there is rear impact. Of course back then this wasn't fully understood so you really can't blame Porsche. They weren't the only manufacturer lacking in this area. And although the 356 actually had an optional head rest you could order it really wasn't worth the extra money because it was far too flimsy to be of any safety value. It was designed for comfort not functionality and the mount was far too flimsy to hold up under an impact. So what are your options? Well you could have the seat structure re-engineered which could be rather expensive or you could replace the seats with an aftermarket racing seat that is designed with safety in mind. Trouble is you will dramatically change the visual appearance of your car's interior. Your last option is to install one of the seats from a 1968 or newer 911 or 912. The seats from this era and for the 911 and 912 where designed to prevent whiplash from occurring should an accident occur. You'll have to watch the years because if you go too new the seats are too wide and won't fit into the older models. Your year range is roughly 1968 to 1973 for installing with no modifications. 1974's and later Porsche seats can work and do have the integrated headrest but they may need some minor modifications. The newest models won't work. There is one last option available to you. That's reproduction seats which are designed off the original but with the proper headrests. They have the look and feel of a vintage Porsche seat so you don't jeopardize the appearance of your cars interior but they have all the modern day safety features. Now doesn't that option make the most sense? And there is more good news. It's actually a very affordable option and there are plenty of choices. You can choose from exact fabric options to match the year you are replacing or you can choose to do something just a little different. And there are plenty of great sites online specializing in after market seats so availability is a breeze. And with so many suppliers you can shop around for the best pricing. Your Porsche seats should look good, feel great, and most importantly they should keep you safe and healthy so you can enjoy your Porsche for many more years to come. So which option will it be?
