Holiday for each mother: celebrations around the world
There are several different holidays around the world that have the main theme of the holiday to celebrate motherhood and thank mothers. Even though the main theme is the same, each country has its own specifics to this celebration, whether this is a different celebration date or different celebration traditions. This article will provide some information on holidays for mothers that are celebrated around the world and will list some of the holiday specifics.
The most commonly celebrated holiday is the Mother’s Day. Let’s first look at the Mother’s Day celebrated in United States of America. The US Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. People who decide to celebrate this holiday do many activities that are done on this holiday around the world: congratulate their mother, give gifts to them and celebrate motherhood. Many other countries base their Mother’s Day celebration on the type of the celebration adopted in United States.
Mothering Sunday is the holiday in United Kingdom that is similar to Mother’s Day in United States. Mothering Sunday has several other names: Mother's Day, Laetare Sunday Mid-lent Sunday and Rose Sunday. This holiday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which usually happens in March or beginning of April. This holiday has been celebrated for several hundreds of years and is based on the old Victorian British tradition to let apprentices and servants on this day to visit their home and their mothers. Flowers, chocolate and candy are the most common gifts for Mothering Sunday.
Other countries around the world have similar Mother’s Day holidays. The dates when the Mother’s Day is celebrated could be the same in the case of one country but different in the case of another one. For example, similar to the United States Mother’s Day, this holiday is celebrated on the second Sunday in May in the following countries: Canada, Australia, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Japan, the New Zealand, China and several other countries around the world.
Other countries may have a different date set for the Mother’s Day holiday. It is impossible in this article to list all the dates for all countries but is important to provide a few examples. For example in Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Romania the Mother’s Day is celebrated on March 8th. India, many countries in South America, Mexico and Malaysia celebrate this holiday on May 10. In Russia is celebrated on the last Sunday of November. For Poland this date is May 26, for Indonesia it is December 22, for France it is the first Sunday in June or last Sunday in May.
Some of the countries have some specific details that relate to the Mother’s Day holiday. For example, in South Korea this holiday is called the Parents' Day and is celebrated on May 8.
In Thailand this holiday is the birthday of Queen Sirikit Kitiyakara and is celebrated on August 12. In Argentina this holiday’s name is Día de la Madre and is celebrated on the second or third Sunday in October.
Another holiday to mention is the International Women's Day – the mix of Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. Though also celebrated in many other countries in the past, this holiday is currently celebrated in several countries including Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Macedonia, Moldova, and several other countries of the former Soviet Republic.
