Designer Furniture by Eileen Gray Eileen Gray was born in 1878 in Ireland and became a renowned architect and furniture designer of her time, but has quickly become forgotten over time. Her pieces are still sought after now and bring in millions at auctions due to their timeless nature and well-designed features. She worked mainly in London and had her own shop there that she was able to bring her designs to the public. She made several designs for furniture and also designed her home in California. Contemporary Furniture Designer: Functional and Ergonomic Isamu Noguchi was a prominent Japanese-American artist and landscape architect who was born in 1904. He designed several lamps and furniture pieces that were mass-produced that are still being produced and sold today. His designs were deliberately made to make something useful in everyday life, as well as look attractive and contemporary. He is mainly known for his lamps and some pieces of furniture. Modern Furniture: Making the World a Better Place George Nelson believed that modern designers should focus their designs on making the world better since nature was already perfect; man only ruined it when he made things that did not follow the rules of nature. Because of his view on designs, he came up with new ways to improve the solutions that were needed to make every day life easier. Modern Furniture by Charles Eames Charles Eames was a great architect and designer of modern furniture. He worked closely with his second wife, Ray, and together their collaborations are still seen and in use today. Eames was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1907 and as he became an adult, the Finnish architect Eliel Saarin greatly influenced him and he moved to Michigan at Saarin’s request to study at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Mies van der Rohe: Designer Chair Par Excellance The Barcelona chair was designed in 1929 exclusively for the Barcelona World Fair and was a collaboration of both Mies’s and Lilly Reich. Its design was a futuristic inspiration to the campaign chair of the Romans and the folding chairs of the Pharaohs. Arne Jacobsen: The Art of Creating Contemporary Furniture The Arne Jacobsen chairs are extremely sought after in the contemporary market because they provide fluid lines as well as giving a sort of “futuristic” feel to a room.
